Hey hey party people,
Taking a Fashion Word of the Week break to share my list of fashion documentaries featuring Black creatives as part of my Black Contributions to Fashion series! We’re taking Black History Month into the rest of year. Consider watching a few of these as your pre-event homework for this year’s Met Gala. In no particular order:

The Gospel According to Andre: Life and career of fashion icon Andre Leon Tally
Donyale Luna: Supermodel: Life and career of one of the first black models
Battle of Versailles and Versailles '73: American Runway Revolution: 2 different documentaries on the famous American vs French fashion battle, featuring Stephen Burrows as one of the battling designers
Just for Kicks and Sneakerheadz: 2 different documentaries on sneaker fashion, ranging from athletics to hip hop fashion
Fresh Dressed, The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion, and Style Wars: 3 different documentaries on the history of hip hop fashion from different perspectives
Invisible Beauty: Bethann Hardison looks back at her journey as a pioneering Black model
Garms: Black Culture’s Influence on British Fashion: celebrating Black culture’s contributions to UK fashion
Black + Iconic: Style Gods: celebrating the cultural impact of Black fashion pioneers
Paris is Burning: Docu on ball culture of NYC, and the Black, Latino, gay, trans communities involved
And while not an official documentary, there’s my profile of American couturiere Ann Lowe.
Enjoy and feel free to add any I missed in the comments!
