Fashion Word of the Week: CROCKING
Folks.
This week’s WoW is brought to you by this absolutely insane Reddit story.
TLDR: everything in this woman’s house is turning green. One commenter asks her if she wears cheap jeans, maybe the dye is rubbing off the jeans and getting all over her cats, sheets, etc. Nope, she doesn’t wear jeans. AND THEN, someone says, “Wouldn’t it be wild if this is how you find out your husband is cheating on you with someone who wears jeans?????”
Spoiler alert, my darlings, that is exactly what happened. When I tell you my jaw is still on floor as I type this.
So, Word of the Week. Crocking is when you rub fabric and the dyestuffs slough off the fabric and get all over your fingers. This often happens with jeans and indigo. This is more often true of cheaper jeans, as they don’t bother with the final rinses to wash off the excess indigo. You ever wear brand new jeans all day and take them off to reveal blue thighs?
This is one of the reasons I prefer goatsuede to lambsuede, as lambsuede tends to crock more. YMMV but that’s been my experience.
Bleeding is when dye comes off the fabric when the fabric comes in contact with liquid. Crocking=dry rub. Bleeding=wet marinade. A little joke for the cooks in the house.
OMG I’m such a nerdy little teacher, I literally jumped from the Reddit story to open Substack to write this post.
P.S. Here’s my deep dive how to design jeans video!
