Fashion Word of the Week: VOILE
Pronounced vwal, like wall, call, fall.
Tall Polly Crawley* smoked Pall Mall cigarettes in a violet voile gown in the Met Gala hall. Say that five times fast.
Not pronounced coil, foil, soil. It’s French. It means veil.
Voile is a lightweight, semi-sheer fabric, often made of cotton or silk twisted yarns in a plain weave. Polyester versions exist, as mills often use polyester to create cheaper renditions of natural fiber fabrics. It’s delicate, soft, and drapey. Its surface is smooth and silk versions have a slight sheen.
Voile is often made into drapey dresses, bridal and evening gowns, the kind of curtains where you want some soft sunshine to glow through, and breathable, light linings.
Voile is a little more substantial than batiste and both are a little more substantial and drapey than gauze.
*In college I knew a Clayton Payton and an Elston Poston. Rhyming names exist. I made them both show me their IDs because I initially didn’t believe them.
P.S. Here are my fabric book recommendations!
Brilliant, as always. 😊 just want to suggest, I feel like pictures would help with this one for visual learners. Especially when you discern between voile, batiste and gauze 😇
In a similar situation, growing up I had to take computer classes in school and we were all assigned usernames. My first initial and last name made for my login to be SMack. I loved it and used it as my email and username for a lot of different things but I'm constantly surprised that people think I'm our here using that username as a nod to anything other than a unique name... I guess there are people out there trying to put a username with drugs or something in it for fun?
