Fashion Word of the Week: CUTTER’S MUST or PATTERN CARD
Because some people call pattern makers pattern cutters, however all pattern people MUST make a CARD of all the pieces you MUST cut to complete your garment. (Say that 5 times fast.)
A Must or a Card is a piece of paper, usually a thin cardstock, that lists all the pattern pieces involved in the garment construction: front, back, sleeve, collar, front facing, etc. It lists how many pieces of each, like 1 collar and 2 sleeves. They are categorized by type of fabric, like these pieces are cut out of the main fabric, aka the “self” fabric, and these pieces are cut out of the lining fabric.
Other info includes a sketch/flat of the design, front and back, a list of trims, how much of each material is needed for the design, swatches, and description of anything that needs to be cut but doesn’t require a pattern, such as 47” of bias binding in self fabric.
The sample pattern maker fills out this card when/as they complete the pattern and the cutter should use this as a checklist to make sure all the parts needed are bundled for the sample sewer. This card stays with the pattern, always.
P.S. You can buy my pattern card template, download it, and print it out as many times as you like.
